Dominion - Addictive and best played to metal
I’ve been playing a lot of Dominion this year. It’s a card game and what is known as a ‘deck building’ game. You get 500 cards in the base set, and each game is different as you choose a set of 10 main types of cards to play with randomly at the start of each game.
It’s incredibly addictive, and you get really angry when you lose as although there is a certain amount of luck in the game, usually it’s your own stupid fault.
Once you get the hang of it and don’t have to keep reading the cards all the time, play really gets going and you find yourself itching to take your turn each time. Initially you get brain ache trying to figure out what it all means, but after a while it all becomes second nature and you can remember what a card does just from its name.
So basically, you’re building a Dominion and trying to make a bigger and better one than your opponents. You do this by getting gold into your hand, which you then use to buy either more gold, kingdom cards (which let you actually do things, or ‘actions’) or actual land such as estates, duchys etc.
It always starts of quite softly, but once people accumulate enough money to buy land everyone usually panics and it all kicks off.
It’s brilliant, pretty easy to learn, and completely absorbing. And a bloody good laugh. And great to play when you’ve had a few and there’s some Metallica blaring out.
